Bicycles on public transport

As of 21 December 2025 There are new rules as to bikes that are allowed on public transport. It is to sole responsibility of the rider to know if their bike is permited on public transport and can come on club ride that invole train travel.

Regualer bicycles
Allowed on trains, excuding at the first door of the first carriage. This is a priority area for passengers with accessibility requirements.

E-Bikes
these fall in two two catagory’s.

1) Converted e-bike – Are Ban onboard a metropolitan or regional train in Victoria, or into a ticketed area (e.g. platform) and
face fines of $508 ($101 for children), with a maximum court penalty of more than $2000.

2) Purpose built E-bikes – So long as they fall within the requirements set out below (EPAC) are allowed on on metropolitan trains
provided that you:

. Don’t board at the first door of the first carriage. This is a priority area for passengers with accessibility requirements.
. Make sure it doesn’t block doors or aisles.
. Avoid busy carriages and travelling during peak hours.
. Walk your bike or e-scooter on trains, platforms and through stations – only ride once you’ve left the station precinct.
. E-bikes and e-scooters must also be switched off and cannot be charged on board, on platforms or in station precincts.

Converted e-bikes 

A converted e-bike is a pedal bicycle that has been modified to make it an electric bicycle. This includes pedal bikes converted ‘pre purchase’ (i.e from a retailer) or ‘post-purchase’ (using a conversion kit), and includes conversions installed by a bicycle mechanic. Converted e-bikes typically have one or more of the following identifiable features:

. A battery that is attached to the bicycle frame using hooks, loops, tape or cable ties

. An externally mounted controller box

. An externally mounted motor

Purpose built E-bikes

These are bikes designed to be electric rather than a regular bikes. This means that the motor specifically; as well as other components such as the battery; are designed and incorporated into the frame or build of the bike.

. The bikes must comply with Electrically power-assist cycle (EPAC)

. Pedal-assist only(the motor provides power assistance when the rider is pedalling, and only up to 25km/h

. Has a motor up to 250 watts or less.

. A motor stop assistance once bike reaches 25km/h

. They cannot be propelled by a throttle (except up to 6km/h – sometimes referred to as “walk mode”)

. The assistance cannot be modifyed beyond 25km/h

. Looks and handles like a stand bike
